Neue Wache, or New Guard House, was created by Schinkel and today serves as a memorial to the victims of war and tyranny. Buried on the inside are the remains of an unknown soldier and a resistance fighter, as well as soil from nice European battlefields and concentration camps. In the center of the structure is Mother and her Dead Son, a sculpture by Kathe Kollwitz.
